(1783–1859), американский писатель. Родился 3 апреля 1783 в Нью-Йорке. Первые публикации Ирвинга, театральные эссе и сатирические зарисовки из жизни нью-йоркского общества, появились в газете «Морнинг кроникл», издателем которой был его брат П.Ирвинг. В 1804 Ирвинг отправился за границу.

В 1809 выпустил свою первую книгу История Нью-Йорка, рассказанная Дидрихом Никербокером (Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York) – сатирическое обозрение нравов, политики, истории и властей Нью-Йорка, заслужившее лестный отзыв В.Скотта. Во время англо-американской войны 1812–1814 писал биографии морских военачальников, был адъютантом губернатора Нью-Йорка в чине полковника. В 1815 вновь отправился в Европу, где прожил 17 лет.

В 1829–1832 Ирвинг занимал пост атташе при американской дипломатической миссии в Лондоне, затем вернулся в США. Неутомимый путешественник, он спустился вниз по рекам Огайо и Миссисипи, пересек территорию Оседж, соприкоснулся с жизнью американского фронтира. Свои впечатления он позже выразил в книгах Путешествие в прерии (A Tour on the Prairies, 1835), Астория (Astoria, 1836) и Приключения капитана Бонвиля (The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, 1837).

У себя в усадьбе Саннисайд на Гудзоне он продолжал писать книги, давал советы по политическим вопросам, выносил осторожные суждения о наиболее оригинальных молодых писателях, таких, как Н.Готорн и Э.А.По, – словом, поддерживал репутацию выдающегося американского писателя, которого знают при дворах Европы и в литературных кругах Англии, друга У.Гиффорда, Дж.Г.Байрона и В.Скотта. Под конец жизни написал пятитомную Жизнь Вашингтона (Life of Washington, 1855–1859).

Умер Ирвинг в Тарритауне (шт. Нью-Йорк) 28 ноября 1859.
